A Very Exciting Day

As many of you know I have been blogging now for almost two months. I have enjoyed every minute of this experience, but today was the most exciting day of my little blogging life.

What started out as an ordinary morning of checking emails turned up a very exciting discovery. I have started a book club "My Life Book Club" in hopes of communicating with those who enjoy reading as I do. I announced the book club's inaugural selection on March 19^th as "What Doesn't Kill You" by Virginia DeBerry and Donna Grant, and today I received a comment on the blog post from the authors themselves. (Check it out here. - Scroll to comments section at the bottom of the page.) The authors thanked us for choosing them. I just about fell out of my chair after reading the comment. How did they know we were reading their book? I am so excited.

Now for many I am sure this is no big deal, but to me it is huge. It means people actually read my blog. When you sit at a computer and don't actually see others reading your words it can sometimes be discouraging, but reading that comment today was all of the encouragement I need. A Prayer for Avery

This morning while at church the Pastor brought up a young couple about my age and we prayed for them.  The husband, wife and little baby are facing a very challenging situation.  The baby, not more than 4 months old, is going to have open heart surgery this Thursday.  Her name is Avery, and she is beautiful.

I am asking that you add Avery to your prayer list.  Please keep her parents in your prayers as well for strength during this time.  I cannot imagine what the family is going through right now, but I do know that the prayers of the righteous avail much.  If you believe in the power of prayer, I ask that you pray for Avery this week.  I do not know their last name, and I do not know the full extent of Avery's illness.  What I do know is that a God knows, and He is much bigger than any of our problems.

Take it to God.  Take everything to Him in prayer.  May God strengthen you as well during your time of struggle.

Top 5 - Sunny Day Edition

So it is very late for people like me who think about going to bed at 9 pm, and the reason I am up do late can be blamed on the amazing weather we are having in Houston today.  I did clean the house this morning, but after that it was time to soak up the sun.  In honor of sunny days, I would like to offer my list of the top 5 things I LOVE about sunny days.  (Along with a couple of things I am not too fond of.)

1. Sandals and flip flops.  I guess that means it is time for a pedicure.
2. Sunglasses.  I love wearing sunglasses.  The problem I usually run into is finding them, and finding them in one piece.  My three year old is a fan of sunglasses too.  She has her own pair in a sunglass holder in my car.  If I put mine on then she must put hers on.
3. Water.  Swimming, the beach, the pool, water balloons, or even drinking a tall glass of water on a warm sunny day.
4. Rolling the windows down.  With my sunglasses on, and my Carrie Underwood playing a little too loud. (Now you know that is when I am in the car by myself...when others accompany me it's the "choo choo" song all day long!)
5. Not having to turn on the AC.  This would mean the sunny day is a spring day and not a hot Houston summer day.  Anytime I can keep money in my pocket and away from the electric company is a good day.

Two things I don't enjoy...

1. Sunscreen.  I know we must use it, but it is certainly a task to apply.
2. Having an appointment or having to work on the sunny day.  Looking out of the window and seeing others enjoy what you long to enjoy is tough.

I Want To Be Known As…

I took a moment today to think about what I would love to have said about me at my funeral. I know that sounds a little dark, but just walk with me. I remember going to a funeral with my mom years ago, and I was absolutely touched by the things people had to say about my mom's friend. I listened to them all speak about this woman with such love and respect, and it was at that moment that I decided that I wanted to be remembered like that at my funeral. One of the things I want to be known as is – SELFLESS.

By definition SELFLESS means thinking of others first or putting other people's needs, interests, or wishes before your own. When I leave this earth destined for Heaven I hope the word SELFLESS is used to describe me. SELFLESS is certainly how I would describe Jesus, my greatest role model.

I think it is important to consider how you will be remembered because it will help you make decisions today. As a result I would like to present to you the top five ways I resolve to be more SELFLESS:

1. Pray more for others. I know I can be a little self-centered when it comes to praying by always talking to God about my problems. However, I can only imagine the power in praying for others. I resolve to spend more time focusing on the prayer requests of others.
2. Spend more time with family. Because my family is spread across the far reaches of this country it becomes hard to stay connected. I want to spend more time writing letters, sending cards, making phone calls, sending emails, and keeping up with this blog as a way to connect with family. I resolve to do these things no matter how busy my life may seem.
3. Listen more attentively. Being born in the microwave generation, fast and easy are our favorite words. I really want to spend more time listening. When my friends or family call on me, I resolve to spend more time listening to them and less time talking about myself.
4. Teach my children to be SELFLESS. It is really important to me to pass good character traits on to my children, and this is a great place to start. I resolve to take the time to teach SELFLESSNESS to my children daily. (Most importantly through my actions.)
5. Be as transparent as possible. I know this one seems strange, but I strongly feel that being an open book for others can help them through difficult times. People learn best from experience or from the experience of others, but how can they learn anything if we aren't willing to share. I know for a fact that there is no benefit in hiding who we are or pretending that we are something we are not. I want you to know about my mistakes so you will not make them yourself. We have to learn from one another, and I resolve to be open about my experiences, especially in this blog. If you want to know, just ask.

Someone Should’ve Told Me

Now that my daughter is three and I would officially call her potty trained, I realize that I was not told the whole truth when it came to potty training. Someone should've told me that potty training takes a really long time.

When I was pregnant I read all of the right books, and all of those books talked about potty training like it was "no big deal". I actually received my very first potty at a baby shower from my aunt, and I received my second potty as a gift for my daughter's first birthday. I purchased my third potty from Wal-mart to ride in the back of my SUV. I purchased my first potty seat cover from Target when my daughter was about two years old, and I bought my first folding travel potty seat cover shortly after that. I never realized that potty training required so much equipment. I ordered my free potty training DVD from the Pull Up people, and I had every type of Pull Up imaginable. I even had cute training panties. I knew I was ready to conquer this potty training thing.

Just for clarification, here is why I needed all of those potty supplies:

1. The baby shower potty #1 is the potty that is in the downstairs bathroom.
2. The potty seat #2 is the potty that is in the guest bathroom.
3. The Wal-mart potty #3 is the potty that is in the back of my SUV. (You will not believe me when I tell you that potty has been the most useful of all.)
4. The Target potty seat cover is for the bathroom in the master suit.
5. The folding travel potty seat, from Wal-mart too, was purchased out of necessity. (I had to do something to keep potty training up on our first trip away from home.)

Now what I wish someone would have let me in on about potty training:

1. Pull Ups are EVIL. They are just over priced pampers, and I would limit the use of them as much as possible.
2. The cute panties are nice, but not practical for potty training girls. Go for the square bottom potty training undies from Wal-mart. They come up and down easy, and have a little extra padding for the tiny accident.
3. Potty training takes a lot of time. It took my daughter about 8 months to get from her first tinkle to "fully potty trained".
4. Potty training takes scheduling. You always have to be aware of your potential bathroom break, and plan it into everything you do. (Enter potty seat in the SUV.)
5. Toilets in America are so nasty it will make your stomach turn. You will hate them even more when you have a potty training toddler to assist. My solution – Lysol disinfecting wipes, a folding travel potty seat, and Wet Ones.
6. The Pull Ups DVD is propaganda. It is not meant to do anything but make you feel warm and fuzzy. It's free, but take it with a grain of salt.
7. Potty training doesn't work if the child is not willing.
8. Your child WILL backslide during the potty training process. NO DOUBT ABOUT IT.
9. Going #1 and #2 are very different. My daughter would hide when it was time to do #2, and one day my husband and I watched her every move. She made a quick move towards her "spot", and we ambushed her and took her to the potty. #2 came out, and we cheered so loud that the neighbors could here. #2 in the potty from then on.
10. Night potty training can be hard, or it can be very easy…and I have no good reason why this is the case. We were blessed that our daughter did not have very many night accidents at all. Thank God for that.
11. Cheering is mandatory. You may sound like a crazy person to the individual in the stall next to you, but you must congratulate you child for a job well done. It will make them eager to do it over and over again. Conversely, you cannot harp on the accidents. Acknowledge them and move on. You will both be happier for it.
12. You will wash a ton of clothes during this potty training process. You will also wash some nasty clothes too. It's just part of the process. This too shall pass.

In all, the smile on my daughter's face when she realizes that she is a big girl and can go potty all by herself is well worth the challenges. The other great thing about having a potty trained child…say it with me gang…NO MORE BUYING DIAPERS! It is an expensive, but necessary part of life. You will be very glad to move on and use your money for other things.

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse – A Bible Lesson

I know the title of this post in and of itself may be a little…confusing, but I am going to give this to you as God gave it to me this morning.

Being that I have a three year old daughter I am blessed to watch quite a bit of the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on the Disney Channel. Overall the show is pretty predictable, so I was surprised when the Lord visited me during the episode this morning. I was arrested while viewing Mickey Mouse and the gang, and I was taught a lesson about how God works in the process.

For those of you who have been blessed to watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse as well, you may be familiar with the following characters - MouseKadoer, MouseKatools, and Toodles. These elements appear in every episode of the show, and their primary role is to provide the items the characters need in order to complete the task of that episode. The MouseKadoer is the big machine that loads the MouseKatools into Toodles. A better way to look at it is the MouseKadoer is the hardware store and Toodles is the tool box and the MouseKatools are the tools in the toolbox. (Sorry for being so simple.) While looking at the show this morning something hit me…this entire setup is very similar to how God works in our lives. Follow me now.

When the episode starts the characters are presented with a problem, and they turn to the MouseKadoer (hardware store) as ask for MouseKatools. Then in flies Toodles (the tool box) to receive the tools from the MouseKadoer. At this point in the show the characters are unaware of how the tools will be used. All they know is that the tools are available. Mickey then informs the audience that if you encounter a problem and find yourself in need of a tool, all you have to say is Oh Toodles, and he flies right in with all of your potential tools. Oh Toodles only carries four tools. The thing that struck me about the MouseKadoer is that it appears unaware of the challenges the characters will face, yet it is fully able to fill Toodles with the correct MouseKatools. I have never seen an episode where Mickey and the gang call on Toodles and he has the wrong tools. Hmmm. Is the MouseKadoer psychic or something? How does it know what tools to pack in Toodles?

The second thing I notice is Toodles is always available. No matter where Mickey and the gang are, Toodles is always one shout away. The characters yell Oh Toodles, and it appears. They never appear nervous about whether or not Toodles will show up no matter where they are. Toodles has shown up when they were in the desert, the beach, and even in outer space. Toodles never lets them down, and they never hesitate to call on him.

Finally, I noticed that Toodles is called on whenever they have a situation, but he is not necessarily there immediately. Now if you have seen an episode you may beg to differ, but I question why Toodles comes in on a wave, or a pair of skies over the mountain top, or from under water. Toodles could just pop onto the screen and that would be that, but my question is why does it take so long.

Here is what I have surmised about the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and how it became a Bible Lesson this morning:

1. The MouseKadoer acts the way God would in our situation.
2. The MouseKatools are chosen for us in each task of life.
3. Toodles sure acts like the Holy Spirit, and is always dependable.

The fact that the MouseKadoer already has the knowledge of the tools Mickey will need to meet the challenge of the day reminds me of how God has the ability to equip me with the tools necessary to meet any challenge in my day. Nothing is too great for God. The fact that the MouseKatools are chosen for the characters before the challenge is met reminds me that God can tell me what equipment to use when I meet that challenge. I don't need to do this on my own, and He will not put more on me than I can bear. The fact that Toodles is always there for Mickey when he needs him reminds me that God sent the Holy Spirit to us as a guide. The Holy Spirit is just as accessible to the Christian as Toodles is to Mickey Mouse. All we have to do is call on Him.

We have to remember that God has equip us with all we need to get through life, however we often meet challenges and attempt to use the tools without reading the instructions, or just by picking a tool out of the box that "looks right" for the situation. We should consult God at every turn. We should ask Him which of our tools we should use. We should never doubt that He will answer.

The thing that struck me most was figuring out why Toodles sometimes appears to take the scenic route. This action reminds me that I must be patient and wait on the Lord. I first have to have enough faith to call on Him and believe that He will answer, but if the answer isn't immediate, then I must not lose faith. I have to wait for my answer. God is not on our time. I struggle with this, and most in our generation do simply because we have been taught to "get it now" and ask questions later. This is not how God would have it. Ask Him first, and wait on the answer. You will be glad you did.

God can meet you anywhere. Even in your living room while watching Mickey Mouse.

My New Favorite Thing

Some of you may be wondering how I keep up with all of the blogs you see listed on the left hand side of this post, and the answer is Google Reader.  I have fallen in love with the application, but it was very new to me when I first started.  Google Reader is yet another great way to stay connected and is part of the ever popular Google enterprise.  I am a firm believer that Google is the best search engine around, and Google Reader lives up to the high quality standards I have come to expect from anything carrying the Google name.

The best way to describe Google Reader is an email for your blogs.  The application gives you the ability to follow many blogs at one time, and read each post like an email.  I follow all of my money saving blogs via Google Reader.  I had to find a way to sort through the more than 200 posts a day to find the ones that I really need to know about.  Yes 200 per day.  Many times Google Reader is great because I can quickly sort through posts and eliminate those that are not in my area (i.e. Aldi) or those that don't pertain to me (i.e. dog posts).  I can also email myself and others if I see something worth sharing.

Google Reader is a great way to keep up with when blogs post new information.  When new posts are uploaded to the internet your reader will show you who has a new one and how many.  You can also do things like tag your favorite posts and rate them for relevance.  I am sure I have yet to learn all there is to know about Google Reader, but I would suggest it to anyone.  I also love how easy it is to follow someone new.  You can search for the blog right on the Google Reader site, and subscribe to the blog on the spot.  No mess and only a few clicks.  I would suggest you try following My Life As... on Google Reader.  I will be your guinea pig.  How about this...let's have our first contest.  Sign up for a Google Reader account, and follow my blog.  The 10th person to leave a comment on my blog telling me you joined and are following my blog will win a prize.

Suffering Produces Perseverance

When I think of suffering I immediately equate it with tears, pain, hopelessness and despair, but I read a scripture today that tells a different story. Romans 5:3-4 exudes hope, and I was completely perplexed by the thought of hope in suffering. The scripture lays out a hierarchy that leads to hope, but it starts with suffering. Now how can that be? How can you go from something so negative and hurtful to something positive? "Rejoice in our suffering…suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope." Huh? Say that again…and say it very slowly. How can suffering be good?

After taking a minute to consider that surely God can't be wrong, I realized where He may be coming from. As I look back over my life, and I don't have to look back too far, I can recall times when I suffered. I was brought to tears over an experience and at that moment I could not see the light at the end of the tunnel. Suffering by definition is supposed to be hard. Synonyms for suffering are pain, anguish, distress, misery, agony, torment and affliction. I wondered how I could move on from this suffering, and certainly how I could achieve perseverance as a result of it. Now the concept of perseverance is tricky because at first glance it may appear to insinuate movement in one direction or towards something, but that would be the verb persevere meaning to continue and never give up. The word perseverance used here is a noun which speaks to ones insistence, urgency, determination and firmness. Now it was starting to make more sense. I believe it is possible that suffering can produce perseverance. Look at it this way. If a baby is told to stay away from the stove because it is hot, refuses, and touches the stove she will likely be burned and experience pain. Most babies when approached with the same situation in the future are determined not to feel that kind of pain again and will opt not to touch the stove. Suffering is a part of life, but what really matters is how we respond to the suffering. Consequently, how we respond, and with what level of determination, will put us in the perseverance category.

Knowing what I know now, I don't think I mind the suffering if I can experience the perseverance that can follow. My friend told me today that life is a marathon, and since I believe that is true, I know when I run I must be steady, and determined. I must be willing to work at life for the rest of my life. I have to work towards knowing who I am and what I stand for. I must be deliberate and aggressive in this race despite any difficulties or setbacks.

So it appears to be through our suffering that we grow, and it is certainly through our suffering that we develop who we are – our character. Therefore all that is left is HOPE. Now that is easy. Hope is God and it is only achieved through Him. Wow! So I guess you can go from pain, anguish and distress to hope. It is ironic that a definition to hope is somebody or something that seems likely to bring success or relief. Enough said.

Good Friends

My Grandma always told me you only need a few good friends, and now I know exactly what she meant.  I am truly blessed with a few friends that I have had for many years.  I love the fact that my friends have seen me through good times and bad times.  They have seen my ugly days and my most fabulous days.  I am really drawn to television shows and movies that depict friendship that lasts through the ages because that is what I would love to experience. 

I would like to highlight a friendship that I share with someone who is near and dear to me.  She has always been there for me, even when I was crying outside of class as I prepared for my 12th grade English final exam that I was sure I would fail and they would not let me graduate.  This friend is always there even though we live far away.  I can call her every day or once a quarter, and when we get on the phone it feels like we pick up where we left off.  No matter when I call her she answers, unless she is hiding being admitted into the hospital.  We have a motto for our friendship - "If you like it, then I love it."  This allows us the ability to voice our opinions, but in the end if the other person has a darn good reason for their actions, and it is not putting them in danger, then the other person is supportive until the very end.  My friend knows me; almost as well as anyone can know another person.  We were mistaken for each other in high school often, but ironically we did hang with the same people or aspire to do the same things.  We went on to college and she pledged a sorority...I was not feeling it.  She is great at being a sister!  We seem to travel through life on parallel paths.  If one calls with a problem or a need to vent, the other has just experienced the same thing, or has an experience that allows for an empathetic ear.  I don't know what I would do without her.  Our friendship has led me to a few conclusions about good friends:

1. Good friends transcend time and place.
2. Good friends don't judge you, but they do judge your actions.
3. Good friends are honest, but with so much love that you are not hurt by it.
4. Good friends never judge you by how many times you call or come see them.
5. Good friends always know when to speak and when to let you speak (or monopolize the entire conversation.)
6. Good friends are available day and night.
7. Good friends are understanding of your place in life.
8. Good friends allow you room to grow.
9. Good friends remind you of who you once were - for better or for worse.
10. Good friends can make you laugh so hard you cry.

I thank my friend for always knowing how to pick me up when I am down.  I am glad she is around to remind me of who I once was and to journey with me towards who I will become.  I love you. 

I pray you have a good friend, and not too many, to walk with you through life.  If you have not found that one, try being a friend to someone else.  Friendship is often contagious and is always selfless.

Happy Birthday Mama

Yesterday was my mom's birthday, and we surprised her with a visit to her job because she works on Saturdays.  We had a great time, and I am truly blessed to have my mother with me.  She is an amazing person and is loved by many.  I don't know what I would do without her.  She is my leaning post and my listening ear.  I love you Mama.  Happy Birthday.  This cake is for you!

Please let me explain.

Yesterday I had high hopes of completing my post after my daughter went to sleep...here lies the problem.  I was once again caught up in the beautiful blue skies, and I ran around all day soaking up the sun again. (See Friday's post here.)  When I finally got home it was time to cook, clean and spend family time.  At that point I decided I would post after my daughter went to sleep, however she did not go to sleep easily.  Let me explain.  My daughter currently spends most of her nights on the floor of our room on three fluffy comforters instead of her beautiful full size bed in her room.  She is in the imagination phase, and no matter how many monsters we slay or fish we remove from her bed, her room is not suitable for sleeping in her mind.  We have tried lots and lots of things, but have not been successful.  Last night we decided we would try to get her in the full size bed, even though she normally wakes in the middle of the night and ends up back on her comforter bed.  We tried for about an hour and a half with no results, and by the time we all moved back to the comforter bed I was spent, emotionally and physically.  So there you have it.  There reason I did not write a post yesterday.  Not the greatest excuse, but it is all I have...sorry...again.  I plan to be back on track tomorrow.

I Apologize

I apologize for not writing until now, but it was just so beautiful outside.  I couldn't pull myself away from the amazing weather we are having in Houston to type today.  I am sorry.  Every time I looked at my computer or laptop I was distracted by the clear blue skies.  When I left for work this morning the sun was shining so bright that I needed my sun glasses.  I love daylight savings time.  I love coming home while the sun is still out.  I know I will have to give up an hour of sleep, but it is so worth it.  So I hope you can accept my apology for soaking up some sun instead of typing.  I will try to do better tomorrow.  I will try.

Now I must go and read to my baby before bed.  This is the best part of my day.

An update for those who read my Monday post (here)...my back is feeling better each day.  The healing process is a slow process, but I have promised myself to take it easy as not to reaggravate my injury.
